Destroying The World
Technology is used on daily basis, but no one seems to notice how it is destroying the world. No one seems to wake up in the morning to read the newspaper. Why pay money or take a nice walk to get a newspaper when it is available online? Our generation is quickly changing the world and the society is becoming more brainwashed every single day. Society wants all they can get quicker with doing less work. Technology may not be as awful as it may seem because even though it’s destroying the world, it can be beneficial in other ways.
When it comes to technology now a days, society wants things done quickly. Google is one of the most visited sites today. Google was founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page who were in their early twenties. It all started in September 4, 1998. This is the go to site when needing quick and easy research that only takes minutes instead of days looking for. It may sound like the greatest invention in the world, but it is destroying society’s ways of thinking.
By having quick answers to pretty much everything, it is destroying the human brain. The brain is one of the most important organs in the human body. The brain is constantly battling into multitasking more than before. Smartphones is one of the most used gadget that there is. By having technology available, society is always on the phone, texting, searching the web, walking, and doing everything possible all at once.
An article from, The Atlantic, titled, “Is Google Making Us Stupid.” by Nicholas Carr, has also said that his mind is changing. When he says that it’s changing, he means that its working slower, “I’m not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I’m reading” (Carr 1). Reading has become an issue because lengthy books or pages has become a problem, “Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages” (Carr 1). Using the web often is also making it hard to stay focus on long pieces of writing.
As hard as it may seem to some, health is also being affected as well. Society has become lazy. The Oji-Cree were once people who were always walking miles, no access to any technology. Once they had more technology available to them, “the population suffered massive increase in morbid obesity, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes” (Tim Wu 1). Social also increase as well leading to drugs, alcohol, and suicide.
Although technology may sound like it the worst thing in the world, it’s just what this generation is about. The more reliable technology that there is, there more ways in finding cures for health issues. Not only is it good for discovering new cures, but also it helps businesses grow. Businesses are able to share databases within each other quicker making their businesses a success. It also helps business to expand and increase its production with technology.
Technology may be destroying the worlds mind, but, “technology wants what life wants” (Tim Wu 1). It can be used in many different ways, it just depends on how a person decides to use it. It will make a person lazy, if they give up on caring for their own health. Of course, society doesn’t want to do research for days if they know they can receive that information by a quick click on a hyperlink. Technology may be controlling the world, keep in mind that, “the problem with technological evolution is that it is under our control and, unfortunately, we dont always make the best decisions” (Tim Wu 3).

It is true that although technology has helped find cures for health issues quicker and helped businesses grow, many negative topics involving the web have arisen over the years. You do a good job presenting both sides of the argument and showing examples to support each side.
ReplyDeleteYou stated, "having technology available, society is always on the phone, texting, searching the web, walking, and doing everything possible all at once" Time is a barrier to a civilization growing. Therefore, wouldn't being able to do something all at once, similar as the being in two places at once, beneficial for society? Overall, your claim was clear and good use of quotes back up your ideas.
ReplyDeleteIf wanting things done quick yes, having many gadgets available is great. The problem no one seems to notice is that the brain can only process so much. It is constantly trying to do more than what it's suppose to do. In other words, multitasking is stressing the brain, pretty much bruising it. Of course no one will care because many lost interest in their health.

ReplyDeleteYou are correct on you statement when you said "society has become lazy". Society is becoming lazy, we are becoming mentally lazy. Yet, its our fault, not technology's. Our children are going to grow up with the same habits. Being lazy is becoming habit forming for society. We need to be independent.
ReplyDeleteTime is definitely the key component here. People in today's society are all about how to save time because there is so much to do and 24 hours is just not enough. What better way to save time then with the help of technology advances right? While this is true, at the same time we are slowly inconveniencing ourselves with attention spans decreasing, obesity increasing, and overall a lack of intelligence since we allow gadgets to think for us. I absolutely appreciate the fact that you included how the evolution of technology can also lead to more positive things like advancements in medicine and cures. People seem to forget that technology is so much more broad than just cell phones and internet, myself included!
